Emma Lewis

When we first spied Emma Lewis illustrations we couldn’t help but be charmed. We love her beautifully painted characters and random sketches.

So we took a trip up to Hackney to have a cup of tea and a natter with Emma and to take a peak at her studio and see what inspires her…

ALICE – What is your favourite thing to illustrate?

EMMA – Rows of houses, big skies and forest dwelling animals. I would predominantly like to work as a picture book illustrator, so things that I can weave into stories without patronising kids is good, but also anything that happens to have inspired me.

ALICE – What’s the best project you’ve been involved in?

EMMA – I’m still quite fresh out of art school, but just working on my own things to sell so far has been pretty rewarding and really fun after three years of having everything assessed.

ALICE – What materials do you use in your illustrations?

EMMA – Just about most things – pencils, oil pastels, inks, paper collage, wax crayons, screen print, monoprint………..

ALICE – What’s your favourite art shop or do you know any cool places we should know about?

EMMA – The Gallery (not-for-profit) Cafe in Bethnal Green has good art, music and craft workshops. And the food is super good. http://thegallerycafe.wordpress.com/

ALICE – Which illustrators do you look up to?

EMMA – Mainly European book illustrators like Beatrice Alemagna, Marc Boutavant, and Camilla Engman – illustrators that aren’t afraid to experiment with media and take risks on subject matter.

I’m also really inspired by artists and graphic designers like Stig Lindberg, Charlie Harper, Peter Blake, Frida Kahlo….and of course contemporary British illustrators like Donna Wilson and Julia Pott and their amazing handmade products. The list grows richer by the day really!

A Little Bit of What You Fancy

A Little Bit of What You Fancy located in the heart of Dalston is a great little restaurant that is too good to keep to ourselves.

The mish mash of decor is thanks in part to some salvaged old school furniture, used lemon crates and vintage nick knacks which help to create a friendly cosy atmosphere – making you feel like your in someone’s home, not a resturant.

This paired with the fact that founders, Elaine and Lola source ingredients from local suppliers and growers means there’s no reason not to go!

Great way to relax a bit is to watch some wow videos in your spare time.

You can understand it by how they look – girls that make it big live a full life.

To try and make it there you must be more than 18 years of age of course.

Show Report

Charlotte Dellal looked beautiful in an Temperley London dress and Marie Mercie leopard print hat.

In the backstage chaos we bumped into photographer Zoe Zimmer who has been busy shooting in London before she jets back to LA.

Sandra Hagelstram from, http://5inchandup.blogspot.com/ was busy snapping away and Models1 online editor Sarah Haddon Grant was busy running around keeping models in check.

We sneaked Model Anais Pouliot reading Mens Health backstage – addmitting that she loves to read Women’s Health when she’s in New York!

Overall the show was incredible and a great way to celebrate Alice’s return to the London show schedule. Well done Alice!
